Substance name: | Ethane, 1,2-dimethoxy- |
Additional information: | This substance is on the Domestic Substances List (DSL). The manufacture or import of a substance not on the DSL may be subject to notification under the New Substances Notification Regulations (Chemicals and Polymers) or the New Substances Notification Regulations (Organisms). Following notification, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada carry out a joint assessment process to determine whether there is a potential for adverse effects on the environment and human health. This substance was added to the DSL as an “Existing Substance” given that it meets the criteria set out in CEPA for substances that were in commerce in Canada between 1984 and 1986. A notice or order has been published indicating that the significant new activity (SNAc) provisions of CEPA apply to this substance. This action can be taken when it is suspected that new activities involving a substance could result in the substance becoming toxic under CEPA. The SNAc provisions of CEPA trigger an obligation for a person to provide the Government of Canada with information about a substance when proposing to use, import or manufacture the substance for a significant new activity. The government then assesses the substance for potential risks to the environment and/or human health. If risks are identified, the government may impose risk management measures.
